Just how dangerous is riding a motorcycle?

Few things are more freeing than getting your motorcycle out on the road. On those days when the weather is just right, it’s easy to ride for long stretches.

Of course, as all motorcyclists know, there are risks. Motorcyclists are far less protected than people in other vehicles, and are more likely than car occupants to be killed or injured in the event of a crash. Some official figures also offer a sense of just how dangerous riding a motorcycle in Kentucky can be.

What statistics demonstrate

A total of 834 people died in road crashes in Kentucky in 2016. Figures from the Governors Highway Safety Association show 111 of those people killed were motorcyclists. That number means motorcyclist deaths accounted for 13.3% of all traffic fatalities that year, the 25th lowest rate among all U.S. states.

The Motorcycle Institute also looked at 2016 road fatalities, including how many vehicles were involved in motorcycle fatality accidents. The institute found 66 of those deaths occurred in accidents involving multiple vehicles, while 45 deaths came in accidents involving only the motorcycle and no other vehicles. That was the second straight year multi-vehicle crashes killed more motorcyclists than single-vehicle accidents.

Possible factors in motorcycle crashes – including for other drivers that were involved in the wreck – include:

  • Weather conditions
  • Distracted driving
  • Driving under the influence
  • Speeding
  • Inattention
  • Reckless driving

Considering a personal injury claim

None of the figures above account for the motorcycle accidents that result in serious, life-altering injuries for riders. That exact number is not known. These crashes happen however, and regularly. It is the unfortunate truth that sometimes motorcyclists pay the price for another driver’s negligent actions.

If another driver causes a crash that seriously injures a motorcycle rider, the victim may want to consider filing a personal injury claim. These cases can be tough, often requiring an attorney to help fight back against aggressive insurance companies. Such a lawsuit however can potentially provide compensation for past, current and future medical bills, pain and suffering as well as lost wages.
